Bringing home, a new puppy is a very exciting time for all the family. Giving your pup their first walk, first bath and all those cuddles! While many pups adjust well to these changes, it can also be a time of stress for a young pup. Everything that was familiar to them has been removed, as they had previously been able to seek the reassurance of their mother and litter mates. Mother dogs naturally release calming pheromones that help to relax and reassure their puppies. When you bring your puppy home, they lose access to those pheromones and it can reduce their levels of reassurance and settling into their new environment slightly more challenging.
However, with the help of Adaptil® Junior you can reassure your puppy in their new home and help settle them in quicker. Adaptil® Junior is a scientifically proven pheromone releasing collar that mimics the same pheromones produced by the pup’s mother to help keep them calm and relaxed. It is worn just like your pup’s regular collar around the neck. The pup’s body heat activates the collar within 30 minutes of it being put on and will begin to release the pheromones. The pheromone in Adaptil® Junior reduces anxiety, fear and provides extra support at a time that your pup needs it most.
When to use Adaptil® Junior collars
Collars are recommended for use from Day 1 of adoption. This will help to smooth the transition into a new home. Collars are worn at all times (unless bathing) and will emit pheromones for 30 days. It is recommended that new Adaptil® Junior collars are fitted every 30 days for at least 3 months to gain the most benefits. Early use of an Adaptil® Junior collar helps to reduce anxiety and assist them to learn more effectively.
Training your puppy
Training and early socialisation can prevent puppies from developing into anxious adult dogs. When puppies are not appropriately trained and socialised, they can develop behavioural problems as adults such as fear, separation anxiety and aggression towards people and other dogs. The ideal period for socialisation of puppies is 3-18 weeks. During this time, it is important that a puppy is exposed to as many different experiences, in a positive manner, as possible. This is one of the many reasons that we at South Cranbourne Veterinary Surgery encourage early puppy vaccinations so that our pups can get out and about to explore their world safely, as early as possible. We also strongly encourage Puppy Pre-School classes (held of a Thursday evening here at the clinic) to expose pups to other puppies and our nurses, so that they can learn how to interact in an acceptable way with both other dogs and other people. Some pups find new experiences and interactions confronting. When pups are anxious or overstimulated they struggle to focus making it challenging for them to learn in a positive manner. Adaptil® Junior collars worn during times of training and socialisation can assist your puppy with focus, while settling anxiety and boisterous behaviour so that they can get the most out of their prime development stages and enjoy new experiences.
